Student Standard Visitor
If you’re looking to study in the UK, you’re probably in the middle of planning and researching your exciting adventure ahead! It’s a good idea to have ‘apply for Student visa’ high up on your to-do list. Don’t worry if you’re not sure where to start, that’s why we’re here to help.
Can I apply for a Student visa?
There are a few things you need to be able to apply for a Student visa to study in the UK, these include:
- being aged 16 or above
- having been offered a place on a course - you can view the courses you can study, here. Don’t forget to check that your course is by a licensed student sponsor - here’s a list of licensed student sponsors so you can check.
- having enough money to support yourself and pay for your course - please note, that the amount may change depending on where you’re planning to study, you can check the amounts, here.
- being able to speak, read, write and understand English
- having consent from your parents if you’re aged 16 or 17. If this applies to you, you’ll need to confirm this consent when you apply.
If you’re aged 16 or 17 and you want to study at an independent school in the UK, you might find that a Child Student visa is a better option for you. Please note, that this Student visa has replaced the Tier 4 (General) Student visa.
When should I apply for a Student visa?
It’s always advised to apply for your visa as early as possible. The earliest you can apply for a Student visa depends on whether you’re applying from inside or outside the UK:
I’m applying from outside the UK
In this case, the earliest you can apply for a visa is 6 months before you start your course. You’ll usually get a decision on your visa within 3 weeks.
I’m applying from inside the UK
In this case, the earliest you can apply is 3 months before your course starts. It’s really important to remember that you need to apply before your current visa expires.
As well as this, your new course needs to begin within 28 days of your current visa expiring. In this instance, you’ll usually get a decision within 8 weeks.
