Do I need a visa to visit the UK for medical reasons?

If you’re looking to travel to the UK for medical reasons, you can apply for a Standard Visitor visa. It’s a good idea to check if you need a visa before you apply.

Your nationality will determine whether you’ll:

  • need to apply for a Standard Visitor visa before you travel to the UK, or
  • be able to visit the UK for up to 6 months without needing a medical visa, but remember, you’ll still need to meet the requirements for a Standard Visitor visa.

What medical reasons can I visit the UK for on this visa?

For up to 6 months, you can visit the UK for the following reasons:

  • have private medical treatment at a hospital or other medical facility
  • have treatment at an NHS hospital. Please note, that you can only do this if the care is paid for by your own government under a reciprocal healthcare arrangement. This is an agreement that the UK government has with some non-EU countries, that allows you to be treated as a UK resident whilst receiving treatment.
  • donate an organ to a family member or close friend, or to be assessed as a donor match

If your medical treatment lasts longer than 6 months, then it’s best to apply for a Standard Visitor visa, regardless of your nationality.

  • Please note, that you can:
apply for a Standard Visitor visa before you come to the UK that lasts for up to 11 months
  • visit for up to 6 months and apply to stay for a further 6 months when you’re in the UK

In this circumstance, there is no limit on how many times you can extend your stay, so you won’t have to worry about this during your treatment.
