Tourist Visa
A step-by-step guide that explains what you need to do.
How do I apply for a tourist visa?
When you apply for a tourist visa, it can be overwhelming at first, but it helps to know what to expect.
-
Step 1 - Before you apply
-
Step 2 - Apply for the visa
-
Step 3 - After you apply
-
Step 4 - Waiting for a response
There are a few important things you need to do before you apply for your visa. Make sure you have:
- a valid passport
- a valid email address
- a valid payment method ready to pay the service fee
For most visitor visas, you will need to create an Immi online account here.
Remember you will need to attach your documents to your account, you can find detailed information on the documents you will need for your type of visitor visa here.
In most cases, you’ll get a notification via email within 12 hours. Make sure you check your junk mail folder too.
Your application might take longer to process if:
- you don't fill it in correctly
- more information is needed from you (for example, you’ll need to provide evidence if you have a criminal conviction and apply for a Visitor [subclass 600] visa instead)
- your information is hard to verify
You’ll get a response in writing about your visa application. If it’s successful, you’ll be told:
- your visa grant number
- the date your visa starts
- your visa conditions
You should keep a copy of this with you while in Australia.
You might be asked to provide more information for your application to be processed or approved. Don’t panic if this happens - you’ll get a letter telling you how to do this.
