UK Visa requirements

What are the requirements for a Standard Visitor visa?

You’ll need a valid passport or travel document to enter the UK. Be sure to check it'll be valid for your whole trip, so you don't have to worry about it later, you can read more about the documentation required, on the documentation tab.

You must be able to show that:

  • you will leave the UK at the end of your visit
  • you can support yourself and anyone you are looking after during your trip 
  • you can pay for your return or onward journey 
  • you will not live in the UK.

Please note, requirements can vary if you’re travelling from Ireland, Jersey, Guernsey or the Isle of Man.

Additional eligibility requirements

If you’re visiting the UK for one of the below reasons, you’ll need to meet a few more eligibility requirements:

  • as an academic, senior doctor or dentist
  • to study, do a placement or take an exam
  • for an event related to your work that you will be paid for
  • for medical reasons

Don’t forget, you’ll need to provide all required documents that show you are eligible.

If you’re travelling from any of the countries listed here, due to the risk of tuberculosis (TB), you will need a certificate that proves you don’t have TB.
