New French train luggage rules: how to avoid a €50 fine

Starting mid-September, French trains will enforce new luggage regulations form the France national operator SNCF, and failing to comply could result in a €50 fine.

Don't worry, here’s how you can avoid the fee and travel smoothly.

Although the baggage limits for high-speed TGV InOui and Intercité trains have changed, passengers are permitted to carry:

  • two large pieces of luggage, each measuring up to 70cm x 90cm x 50cm, and
  • one smaller item like a backpack or laptop case, with dimensions up to 40cm x 30cm x 15cm and
  •  a handbag or purse.

It's good to know that items such as pushchairs, sports equipment, and musical instruments do not count toward these limits.

Avoid the fine

To avoid the €50 fine, make sure your luggage adheres to these new rules before boarding.

Double-check the size and number of your bags to ensure they meet the regulations. If you're unsure about the rules for your specific train, consult SNCF’s guidelines or contact their customer service for clarification. Safe travels and happy packing!
