If you've been thinking about moving to Germany, the new Opportunity Card could be your gateway.
Germany is actively seeking to attract skilled workers to address its workforce shortage and has introduced a new work permit called the Opportunity Card.
How the Opportunity Card works
The Opportunity Card permits non-EU citizens to stay in Germany for one year to seek employment. During this period, cardholders can take on part-time work of up to 20 hours per week or participate in trial work experiences lasting up to two weeks. This flexibility aims to help skilled workers find suitable jobs and for employers to discover needed talent. Upon securing a full-time position, cardholders can transition to a longer-term residency more smoothly.
Eligibility criteria for the Opportunity Card
To apply for the Opportunity Card or Chancenkarte, applicants need to meet specific criteria:
- Educational requirements: At least two years of vocational training or a relevant university degree from the applicant's home country.
- Language proficiency: Competence in German or English.
- Financial stability: Proof of funds or a part-time employment contract ensuring coverage for a year’s stay in Germany (around €12,000).
The points system
Eligibility is also assessed through a points system, with a minimum requirement of six points:
- Professional qualifications: Four points for a recognised qualification or permission to practice a regulated profession in Germany.
- Work experience: Three points for five years of professional experience in the past seven years or B2 level German.
- Additional criteria: Two points for two years of experience with vocational training, being under 35 at application, or holding a B1 German certificate. One point is awarded for being under 40, having stayed in Germany for at least six months, C1 English and A2 German skills, training in a shortage occupation, or applying with a spouse.
Application process
Interested candidates can apply for the Opportunity Card at the German consulate in their home country or at a local Foreigners’ Registration Office in Germany.
This new visa initiative is a significant opportunity for skilled non-EU citizens looking to establish their careers in Germany.
